November - Native American Heritage Month
Today we honor Susan La Flesche Picotte (pronounced picoat). She is widely recognized as the first Native American woman doctor. La Flesche was born in 1865 on the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska. She credits seeing a sick native american woman die after being refused medical treatment as the reason she wanted to be a doctor. After marrying Henry Picotte in 1894, Dr. La Flesche Picotte spent the remaining 20+ years of her life caring for the people of her community, fighting alcoholism and other diseases. She passed on in 1915.
